CIW Subsidiary Experience
Client: Microsoft - Center for Information Work
Take an existing moderated tour created in Director and Flash, communicating through Flash Media Server, running on smart phones, tablets and desktops with as many as three monitors and port it to run only on tablets with the same back end communication to export the tour to international subsidiaries. The Microsoft Center for Information Work (CIW) showcases the company’s evolving vision for the future of information work by demonstrating innovative productivity software that will make this vision real for customers and organizations in five to seven years. It features future software developments that solve real customer problems and improve productivity. In this immersive setting of the CIW, visitors become part of a fictitious company and work individually as well as collaboratively to resolve business process challenges. Through the experience of using prototype technologies demonstrated in the CIW, customers emerge with an in-depth sense of how future software could help empower information workers in areas such as individual productivity, business intelligence, team collaboration and workflows. I have created quite a few fairly extensive prototypes in Director for applications, handhelds and embedded systems, but this was the most involved prototype by far. The codebase I was given had been modified and rewritten three times before it was handed to me, and its quirks continued to surprise me throughout the life of the project. I had to take the jumble of casts and movies from stand alone prototypes built to display only on multi-monitor machines with resolutions as wide as 3072 pixels and redesign them to fit a portrait oriented tablet with a resolution of 768x1024. All of the features from the experience in Redmond were tailored to specific computers or computing devices, so much of the project was importing code from multiple prototypes and making them all work together in a new unified prototype.
